Intrinsic is a site-dependent audio and light installation that explores minimal
sound and audio perception through a slowly changing aural landscape. Dimensions of
the space govern the configuration of the installation. A series of sustained sine
waves are played through one full-ranged loudspeaker placed at one end of the space.
The frequencies of the sine waves correlate to the dimensions of the space and create
standing waves or room modes.
A series of light tubes are hung from the ceiling.
Each light tube correlates to the varying amplitude. As viewers enter the pitch-dark
room, their eyes begin to slowly adjust to the shifting white light intensities that
seem to be hovering in the space. Their ears perceive
changing loudness of different electronic sound materials resulting from the way
they navigate through the
space.
